Cleaning a Dog’s Ears in Three Easy Steps
The best way to learn how to clean a dog’s ears is to watch a dog grooming as it takes place.
Pros know all the tricks, and they know how to do it right. Anyone watching can learn a lot. In the meantime, here is a good ear cleaning regimen.
To clean a dog’s ears, a few basic items are needed. These are:
- A cotton ball (or gauze) and a towel. Avoid using cotton-tipped swabs (Q-tips) or anything else with a pointed tip since these only serve to pack debris and dirt deeper inside the ear canal.
- A veterinarian-approved ear-cleaning solution. There are many products on the market for this purpose, but using these are a hit and miss proposition. It’s much safer to get something from a veterinarian or something recommended by a veterinarian. A quality grooming establishment can also suggest something.

- Gather all the supplies that will be needed. Pick a time and situation when the dog is quiet and calm. Don’t forget snacks. For the dog, not you.
- Gently squeeze the veterinarian-approved cleaning solution into the dog’s ears. After this, massage the base of a dog’s ears for about 30 seconds. This will cause the solution to drain deep into the ears.
- Now comes the step where you must protect yourself: let the dog shake their head. This might cause solution to fly everywhere, but this is what the towel is for. As much as is possible, try to cover the dog’s head with the towel to prevent as much spray as possible. After the dog gets done shaking their head, use a cotton ball (or gauze) to remove the ear canal's excess solution. Do not insert your finger into the ear canal further than the first knuckle.
What about Cleaning a Dog’s Ears With Hydrogen Peroxide?
Do not use hydrogen peroxide to clean a dog’s ears. The skin inside a dog’s ears is very sensitive, and hydrogen peroxide will irritate these cells. Long term use of hydrogen peroxide in a dog’s ears can cause damage. Stick to the use of only veterinarian-approved solutions.
It should go without saying but bears repeating, that dogs can develop many problems in their ears. Fortunately, with reasonable care from a professional dog groomer like ours, most of these problems can be minimized or eliminated. Much of this is a matter of diligently watching the condition of a dog’s ears, and between an owner’s efforts and dog groomers, a dog can enjoy their life irritation-free.
